Members met “down the shore” with Linda Keenan, Director of Development of the Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean, to present the cash donation.

As a response to Hurricane Sandy, the AWC has donated to several shore relief efforts. Over $6,000 has been allocated in donations that will benefit communities in NJ that were affected by Hurricane Sandy.

FARMERS MARKET COMES TO TOWN!

Allendale will finally have it’s own Farmers Market with wonderful, fresh locally grown produce and products. It will be at the Commuter Lot next to Allendale Eats on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays, running from June 1 through November 16.

ALLENDALE – SADDLE RIVER ROTARY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

The Allendale – Saddle River Rotary Foundation is offering two $1500 scholarships to graduating seniors planning on attend college in Fall of 2013.  There are no financial qualifications, though students must reside in Allendale, Saddle River or Upper Saddle River.  All qualifying students are encouraged to apply.  There are three parts to the application: ASR-2013-Financial_Discl[1], ASR-2013-Ltr-students[1], ASR-2013-ScholarshipApp[1]

The Allendale Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is pleased to announce that Bergen County OEM has scheduled the Spring 2013CERT training program. Classes will begin on Wednesday 2/27/13 and run weekly until 4/10/13 from 7:00-9:30PM at the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute in Mahwah. CERT training includes modules in: CERT & Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Medical Operations, Disaster Fire Suppression, Light Search & Rescue, Disaster Psychology, Terrorism Awareness and Animal Preparedness.

This year the program has been expanded to include training for County Animal Response Team (CART) certification. The CART modules of the training will begin on Wednesday 4/17 and continue weekly through May 15. Participation in CART is encouraged, but not required as part of CERT.

Yesterday, Chief Scherb of the Allendale Police Department notified the Brookside/Hillside Superintendent that two luring incidents occurred last week in Washington Township.

Both involved a silver or gray vehicle; one had a male driver and a female passenger and the other was driven by a white male with salt and pepper hair.  In both cases, students were approached and asked several questions.

This information was sent by the Brookside/Hillside Superintendent  as an important alert to remain proactive in reminding your children to be cautious at all times.

Notice From the Ambulance Corps.: Drano Bombs

Kids are putting Drano, tin foil, and a little water in plastic drink bottles and capping it up – leaving it on lawns, in mail boxes, in gardens, on driveways etc. just waiting for you to pick it up intending to put it in the rubbish, but you’ll never make it!!!

If the bottle is picked up, and the bottle is shaken even just a little – in about 30 seconds or less it builds up enough gas which then explodes with enough force to remove some of your extremities. The liquid that comes out is boiling hot as well.

Don’t pick up any plastic bottles that may be lying in your yards or in the gutter, etc.

Pay attention to this. A plastic bottle with a cap. A little Drano. A little water.

A small piece of foil. Disturb it by moving it; and BOOM!! No fingers left and other serious effects to your face, eyes, etc.

The Allendale Police Department would like to alert residents to the recent increase of burglaries in the area. We ask that all residents please remain vigilant to suspicious behavior. If you see a vehicle or person that appears suspicious contact police headquarters at 201-825-1900 or 9-1-1.

The recent increase in burglaries that have been occurring in the area have occurred between the hours of 4:30 P.M. and 9:00 P.M. Burglars tend not to burglarize occupied homes so it is critical to make sure your home looks like it is occupied at all times. Here are some tips to help prevent burglaries.

-         Always leave a few lights on or place them on a timer. A dark home is the best indicator to a burglar if anyone is home or not. A radio on a timer is a great tool to use to prevent a burglary.

-         If your house is alarmed always activate it prior to leaving, even if you will be gone for just a few minutes.

-         If you don’t have motion detectors for the outside of your home invest in them. Place them at a height that a person cannot reach up and unscrew the bulb.

-         Do not keep valuables in the master bedroom in an obvious place. Most burglars will head right to the master bedrooms in a search for valuables.

-         Make sure all doors and windows are locked.

-         Lock your cars at night and don’t leave valuables inside of them.

-         Lastly, if you are going away notify Allendale Police Headquarters at 201-825-1900 that you will be away so we may place you on our vacant house list. We will be sure to keep an extra eye on your home while you are away.

The Friends of the Lee Memorial Library are now offering a Homebound Book Delivery Service to library card holding homebound Allendale residents. Books may be ordered from a large selection of genres and topics such as fiction, best sellers, mysteries, adventure, science fiction, art, non-fiction, etc. Book(s) will be checked out on patron’s card and a member of the Friends will deliver the book(s) to the patron’s home and return them back to the library.

What a great time we all had at the Crescent Commons Social!  The AWC members, Girl Scouts, Girl Scout leaders, Crescent Commons residents, and United Bergen Way employees all turned out to meet and greet one another this past Tuesday night.  The food was fabulous – catered by Allendale Eats.  With a little jazz music and great conversation – the night was a success!!

Library Activities offered a world of dance yesterday at the Lee Memorial Library. With over 40 residents (parents and children) in attendance the Multicultural dance by Joanne Pang Atkins,  was a “HIT”. The children wore kimonos, heard stories and held a real African spear.  On a winter vacation day, the children were able to travel with their imagination.  Their exited faces really made you feel, “what a wonderful gift to offer our community!”
