The Ridgewood Concert Band, which is a wind ensemble composed of musicians from around Bergen County including Allendale, will be having a benefit concert featuring the New York Philharmonic Principal Brass Quintet on June 27 at West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood.  The ensemble will be touring Japan over the summer and will be performing selections from their tour repertoire.  The performers are among the best musicians in the world and this is a great opportunity to have them performing so “close to home”, without even travelling into the city to hear them perform.

On Friday May 4th, we were notified by the Superintendent that in incident had occurred in Old Tappan regarding a man trying to lure a girl into his black sedan car.  Attached is the police sketch and details of the incident.  Please remind your children once again how precious they are and how imperative it is that they do not interact with strangers or approach their vehicles, and that if they are approached they immediately flee to safety and find an adult. Suspect Sketch 5-5-2012 2

Notice From the Ambulance Corps.: Drano Bombs

Kids are putting Drano, tin foil, and a little water in plastic drink bottles and capping it up – leaving it on lawns, in mail boxes, in gardens, on driveways etc. just waiting for you to pick it up intending to put it in the rubbish, but you’ll never make it!!!

If the bottle is picked up, and the bottle is shaken even just a little – in about 30 seconds or less it builds up enough gas which then explodes with enough force to remove some of your extremities. The liquid that comes out is boiling hot as well.

Don’t pick up any plastic bottles that may be lying in your yards or in the gutter, etc.

Pay attention to this. A plastic bottle with a cap. A little Drano. A little water.

A small piece of foil. Disturb it by moving it; and BOOM!! No fingers left and other serious effects to your face, eyes, etc.

Please ensure that everyone that may not have email access are also informed of this.

The Allendale Police Department would like to alert residents to the recent increase of burglaries in the area. We ask that all residents please remain vigilant to suspicious behavior. If you see a vehicle or person that appears suspicious contact police headquarters at 201-825-1900 or 9-1-1.

The recent increase in burglaries that have been occurring in the area have occurred between the hours of 4:30 P.M. and 9:00 P.M. Burglars tend not to burglarize occupied homes so it is critical to make sure your home looks like it is occupied at all times. Here are some tips to help prevent burglaries.

-         Always leave a few lights on or place them on a timer. A dark home is the best indicator to a burglar if anyone is home or not. A radio on a timer is a great tool to use to prevent a burglary.

-         If your house is alarmed always activate it prior to leaving, even if you will be gone for just a few minutes.

-         If you don’t have motion detectors for the outside of your home invest in them. Place them at a height that a person cannot reach up and unscrew the bulb.

-         Do not keep valuables in the master bedroom in an obvious place. Most burglars will head right to the master bedrooms in a search for valuables.

-         Make sure all doors and windows are locked.

-         Lock your cars at night and don’t leave valuables inside of them.

-         Lastly, if you are going away notify Allendale Police Headquarters at 201-825-1900 that you will be away so we may place you on our vacant house list. We will be sure to keep an extra eye on your home while you are away.

Books may be ordered from a large selection of genres and topics such as fiction, best sellers, mysteries, adventure, science fiction, art, non-fiction, etc. Book(s) will be checked out on patron’s card and a member of the Friends will deliver the book(s) to the patron’s home and return them back to the library.
